On Thursday, March 20, middle-aged man identified as Oforma Itodo (pictured above)  was butchered at every part of his body on the fourth day of his mother's funeral while observing some funeral rites with other members of his family in Aji Community in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area.

This incident happened in his family compound when armed men numbering over 50 invaded their compound in the early hours of March 3, 2014 and accosted Oforma with matchets, axes and guns.

A source from the family said that the armed men refused to disclose the purpose of their mission;

“They made straight to Oforma who was caring his little baby, forced the baby out of his hands and started butchering him with matchets at every part of his body."
“They later dragged him out of the compound to an unknown place where they finally finished him and fled."

“We are yet to know what may have caused the attack barely four days of our mother’s burial”, he lamented.

The family source further disclosed that the assailants were not on masque, stressing that “we know a good number of them; James Itodo who is popularly known in the community as Otiyo, was the first person to matchet him”.

The family wondered why the assailants, who were operating in the name neighbourhood watch of the community, did not take the victim to Enugu Ezike Police Station for interrogation, if he had committed any crime.

The deceased Oforma popularly known in the community as “One Kaine man” was said to have been out of the community for quite sometime.

It was learnt that the deceased had petitioned the Inspector General of Police over threat to his life.

A community source alleged that the killer group were not members of neigbhourhood watch of the community but paid agents of a top government official.

When contacted for comment, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amarizu, DSP, said that the deceased was mentioned by three armed robbery suspects already reminded in prison custody as one of their members, who escaped when they were arrested.

He explained that angry mobs attacked him as he returned.

He added that the mob gave him severe beating and that he died before police could come to his rescue.
