Day-Old Baby Boy Abandoned Inside A Soak Away Pit

abandoned baby
Over the weekend, in Olomore Area of Abeokuta North Local Government of Ogun State, a day old baby who still has his placenta uncut was abandoned inside a soak away pit and was rescued only after he had cried for nearly 24 hours.

The baby who was abandoned in a soak away toilet behind Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) Church of Surulere community in Olomole area of Abeokuta North wept to the disturbance of the the vigil held in the said church till the early hours of Saturday.

Worshippers of C&S Church said while they were worshipping, they heard the baby crying, but could not link it to a particular direction. According to them, not suspecting anything amiss, they carried on with their vigil, and left for their respective houses later that morning.

However, later in the day, the baby’s crying became more pronounced and residents nearby got agitated. It turned out that the baby’s cries came from a soak-away pit beside the Church building.

All concerned gathered and immediately a rescue mission was raised. By 6 pm, residents found the baby, a boy, who was found alive with his placenta uncut.
The councillor representing the area, Ayoola Kabir said that he was contacted at about 6.45 pm, and made arrangements to get the baby to the hospital.
“First, the idea of contacting the Police came, but, I considered saving the life of the innocent baby first."
“From experience, going to the Police may result in losing the baby, so we took him to the Local Government Health centre, and he was fully revived and a jaundice injection was given. I came back this morning, Sunday, and thank God, he’s doing fine.”

According to Kabir, the pit slab cover had collapsed some years ago and had not been replaced. The damaged slab concrete saved the baby from going deep into the soak-away pit. Kabir said the matter has been taken up by his ward and will be reported to the local government authority at today’s resumption of duty.
