April 22 was the date of arrival for the largest infant delivered at Massachusetts General Hospital in more than a decade. Baby Carisa Ruscak who surprised every one with her weight of 14.5 pounds had her father, Bryan Ruscak in the delivery room with her mother, Caroline Ruscak.

The new mum who was said to have had her "big" baby via a Caesarean section said:

British Woman To Be Deported From Sri Lanka Because Of Tattoo

 

37-year-old mental health nurse and British tourist from Coventry, Naomi Coleman who was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport on Monday after the airport authorities spotted a tattoo on her right arm is to be deported from Sri Lanka because she has a Buddha tattoo on.

Ms Coleman who was unaware of the sensitivity of Sri Lanka about images of the Buddha and also the tough actions they take against perceived insults to Buddhism was said to be arrested for "hurting others religious feeling" and was held at an immigration detention camp after a magistrate ordered her deportation. 

Narrating her ordeal, she said:
"I got to the airport in Sri Lanka. It was fine. They stamped my passport. There was no problem. 
"I had a short-sleeved top on which showed my tattoo which has got a Buddha on and another Hindu tattoo underneath. There was no problem there.
"It was just when I was taking my suitcases out, one of the taxi men at the stand stopped me and said, 'Oh, this is a big problem in Sri Lanka, you've got a Buddha tattoo.'"

Jonathan More Interested In Second Term Ambition Than Tackling Boko Haram – Soyinka

 

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has criticised President Goodluck Jonathan over his recent political visit to Kano State barely 48 hours after the Nyanya bomb blast and the abduction of school girls in Chibok in Borno State.

Soyinka said it was unfair for Jonathan to have abandoned victims of the Nyaya Motor Park explosion for a political rally in Kano just barely 24 hours after the incident.

Soyinka who stated this while speaking at the main opening of the Port Harcourt UNESCO World Book capital, accused Jonathan of having interest in attending a political rally than tackling the Boko Haram menace.

While urging him to face the problem of Boko Haram uprising and stop concentrating on his re-election campaign, the Nobel Laureate expressed sadness over the trauma the abducted students were passing through. He said:

“Permit me to impose on the leadership of this nation a simple straightforward exercise in empathy. I want you to imagine yourself in a hospital ward; one among the over thousand victims of so many origins in Nigeria. You remember that the actual and wounded are not the only casualties. 

“On that hospital bed, you find yourself playing host to the high and mighty. “You are immobilised, speechless and incapable of motion, except perhaps to your eyelids.
“Local government Chairmen, Councillors, Ministers, Senators and the nation’s President, making promises of free medical treatment and rehabilitation among others, then your spirits are uplifted. You no longer feel depressed and abandoned.
“A few hours after the departure of your August visitors, you see your erstwhile visitors participating in a chieftaincy jollification, just a few hundred miles away.

“Again, a few hours later, the same leadership is at a campaign rally, where the chief custodian of the people’s welfare is complaining that someone allegedly diverted campaign funds to unauthorised use. That national leader then rounds off his outing with a dance that would put Michael Jackson to shame.”

"My Husband Always Beats Me Before We Have Sex" – Woman Tells Court

It was heard in Mapo Customary Court, Ibadan, Oyo State during the process of dissolution of marriage between a middle-aged housewife, Sakirat and her husband, Rasheed Olanrewaju that the latter was in the habit of beating up his wife each time he wants to have sexual intercourse with her.

Mrs. Sakirat told the court that it had become a ritual that he beats her before sex. She said:

“Anytime I don’t allow him to have sex with me, he has made it a routine to beat me  thoroughly. In fact, I currently have many scars on my body due to the series of torture on me."

“Just three weeks ago, he beat me late at night and it took God’s special grace for me to be alive. I can’t stand for long as I used to do before due to the wounds he inflicted on me,”

Olanrewaju speaking in defence told the court that his wife had become insolent and returned home anytime she felt like. He said:

“The last time that I truly beat her, Sakirat bit my manhood and I couldn’t bear it. It is true that I beat her occasionally, but I still love her,” 

The presiding judge, Chief Henry Agbaje out of intuition said he observed that there was still some love between the couple and therefore asked the couple to go and explore reconciliation.

Borno Women Blast Jonathan Over The Abduction Of The School Girls

A week and still counting and the security agencies haven’t been able to rescue the abducted girls . At the news conference which was organised in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital with regards to the abducted school girls, mothers of the abducted girls as well as other women who were in attendance have vowed to go into now dreaded Sambisa forest in search of the girls themselves. 

It was also revealed at the meeting that the security agencies did not provide any security cover for the parents of the girls who went into the forest last week in search of their wards. Wondering why the security agencies have not been able to rescue the abducted girls, the women who are pleading with Boko Haram to release the girls and embrace dialogue expressed anger over the matter.  Prof Hauwa Abdu Biu who led the press briefing, said:

“Is the President telling us that the lives of over 200 girls abducted and taken into the bush more than a week ago are not important?”

“What stopped the security men on the ground from giving security back-up to the parents to go further into the bush?” 

“Women in Borno State condemn in totality such acts of violence as attacks on schools deny children their rights to learn in a safe environment, thereby jeopardising their future.”

Rivers State Governor, Amaechi Promises Free Education For Missing School Girls

At the event to formally designate Port Harcourt as the UNESCO World Book Capital, 2014 which was held at Hotel Presidential in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi who rather suggests agriculture and education as the keys to solving the insurgency as against military action which he says cannot end the Boko Haram insurgency in the Northern part of Nigeria reveals that members of the Boko Haram are being sponsored by unknown individuals. He said:

“For me, I have said over and over that the solution to Boko Haram does not rest in the military. It rests in education and agriculture.

“If anybody tells you nobody is funding Boko Haram, how are they getting the money to buy weapons?”

Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, also promised that free education will be offered to the Secondary school girls abducted by suspected Boko Haram members. He said the school girls will be made to attend the state owned ultra-modern Secondary schools. He said:

“Each of the Secondary school is 4.5 billion naira. As Rivers State Government, anybody who wants to go to that school goes there free of charge and as a step in having being admitted, you are going to be given a laptop. There is no classroom with blackboard; its visual classroom and it is being managed by Indians not Nigerians.

“We are running just one of the schools now and we hope to open the remaining 6. The reason we are yet to open the remaining 6 is because we need 800 million naira per year to run each school and that is because we give free uniforms, free food 2 children per room and so on.

“As the Rivers State Governor, I am willing to assist to take any of the missing school children or as many as we can negotiate into our schools free of charge, “

Chris Brown To Remain In Prison Till June

Chris Brown who was jailed last month after a rehab exercise is reportedly going to remain in prison till June as his latest bid for freedom was denied.

The singer who is involved in an assault case will be flown back to L.A. where he will remain in jail as his trial which was supposed to start today was postponed for June 2014.

To say the least, report has it that Chris Brown might soon be flown back to D.C. on Con air and if convicted in D.C, the judge in the Rihanna case could violate his probation and sentence Brown to four years in prison.

Sharia Court Sentences 63-Year-Old Man To Death For Rape & Infection Of Minor

A sharia court in Kano has sentenced a 63-year-old HIV positive man, Ubale Saidu Dotsa who confessed to inducing a 12-year-old student after which he raped her at Dotsa Village in Kumbotso, Kano. 

The convict who has been living with the virus for over two-years now was sentenced to death by stoning for raping and infecting the minor with the HIV bug.

Report has it that the convict lost his first and second wives to same virus in 2011 of which they both died at six months interval.

Delivering the judgment, Khadi Faruq Ahmed further ordered that N36 million be paid as compensation to the parents of Hauwa Mohammed if their daughter eventually dies.

Estranged Wife Of Pastor Chris Okafor Accuses Him Of Assault

 According to Punch;

Bessem Okafor, the estranged wife of the pastor of Mountain of Liberation Miracles Ministires, Dr. Chris Okafor, has accused her husband of beating her up at their home in Magodo, Lagos.

Bessem who left her home in 2012, said she had, a few weeks ago, gone to visit her four children who were in the custody of their father.

The visit was said to have been arranged by a lawyer from the Office of the Public Defender, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, and her husband’s lawyer, Mr. Onyechukwu Ubani.

She said, “I have not seen my children for nine months and our lawyers agreed that I could come see them at home after school hours by 5pm. I went to the house at the appointed time, but my children were not there.

“I had to wait outside in the compound until 10pm before my husband arrived; the children were not with him. They were later brought home by the driver about 12am. By then it was clear I couldn’t leave again, I had to spend the night.

“The following morning, I bathed and dressed them for school. They pleaded with me to stay back until they returned and since I hardly spent time with them the day before, I agreed.”

What We Saw In Sambisa Forest – Parents Of The Abducted School Girls

One of the lucky abducted students in Chibok who was later rescued and being handed over by her parents at school premises on Monday.

Parents of the abducted school girls who were threatened by the Boko Haram sect for engaging in the Sambisa search recounted their ordeals/experiences of what they saw in the dreaded Sambisa Forest while in search of their abducted daughters.

Narrating their experiences to the state governor, Kashim Shettima when he visited the school, some agrrived parents spoke;

Mallam Amos Chiroma who was among those who combed the Sambisa forest said:
 “We saw a lot of strange things in the Sambisa forest but we will not be able to disclose all for security reasons. Borno and indeed this country require prayers from all and sundry.
 

"While we were in the forest with over 200 volunteers who only had cutlasses, bows, arrows
and sticks, we came across different make-shift camps suspected to be owned by terrorists. It is however unfortunate that we had to turn back when we met one good Samaritan in the forest who advised us that it was in our own interest to go back because the area we were approaching in
the forest was a dead zone dominated by terrorists."

“If soldiers had accompanied us to the forest, we were optimistic that our missing children would have been rescued, or we would be satisfied if we can just see the dead bodies of our daughters”

Woman Gives Birth To Conjoined Twins In Abia

Cases of conjoined twins which is not a consistent happening in Nigeria occurred at Mben Cottage Hospital, Asaga Road, Ebem Ohafia in Abia State.  

The 40-year-old mother of the twins was reportedly said to be reluctant about attending prenatal clinic visits and according to her delivery doctor, Dr. Benard Orji who conducted a two-hour caesarean operation on her, the absence of prenatal visit might have caused the twins to be conjoined.

Speaker Of Ondo State House Of Assembly To Be Buried On Friday

 

Necessary arrangements have been made for the interment of the late Speaker of the Assembly, Hon Samuel Adesina who died in February in a Lagos private hospital during a protracted illness suspected to be cancer. He represented Odigbo II State Constituency in the Assembly until his death.

The burial arrangements are as follows:

Wednesday- 23/4/14 - Service of Song at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade, Akure, Ogun State.

Thursday- 24/4/14 -  Lying-in-State at the House of Assembly complex and Valedictory Sitting in his honour. Also on Thursday, the remains of the deceased would move to Oniparaga, in Odigbo Local Government area of the state, his home town, in a motorcade, for a Christian Wake.

Friday- 25/4/14- Burial service/ Internment
