DISASTER: 22 Burn To Death, 9 Injured In Kano (PHOTO)

No less than 22 persons were reportedly burnt to death on Wednesday in an auto crash in Takai, the headquarters of Takai Local Government Area of Kano State.   The accident occurred at about 12.30 p.m. It was reported that about 9 others had been injured and taken to the Takai General Hospital.  

The vehicle (an old model of Ford) was said to be carrying about 34 persons including bags of foodstuffs. An eyewitness reported that the vehicle which was coming from Magami Village in Sumaila Local Government Area of the state, somersaulted and went up in flames.   

Reps threaten to withdraw govt funds from banks

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Banking and Currency, Mr. Jones Onyereri has threatened to withdraw all public sector funds with the Deposit Money Banks.

Owing to the declaration of huge profits by banks as a result of their investment of public sector funds, the said committee had supported the withdrawal of 50 per cent of the government funds from the banks by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Sanusi reverses self on N7.9 trillion missing oil money

Central Bank governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has withdrawn his claim that at least N7.9 trillion oil sales proceeds was diverted or stolen by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) a week after notifying President Goodluck Jonathan of the missing money.

Mr. Sanusi alarmed the nation in a three-page letter to the president complaining of his frustration with the management of the government owned Oil Corporation whom he accused of paying only 24 percent of all oil sales between January 2012 and July 2013, and diverting the balance into unknown accounts.

Okonjo-Iweala, Senate disagree over N15bn monthly remittance

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Senate Ad Hoc Committee on SURE-P headed by the Deputy Senate Leader, Abdul Ningi on Tuesday disagreed over the formula used to arrive at the N15bn monthly remittances to the SURE-P.

The committee queried the minister for remitting a flat rate every month to the SURE-P account when proceeds from petroleum sales were not stable from one month to another. Members also faulted the minister’s disbursement of N500bn to the states and local governments, and attributed the development for the reason why the programme failed to meet the yearnings and aspiration of the masses. But Okonjo-Iweala asked the committee to invite specific government agencies that had failed to effectively implement the aspect of the programme, which the members of the public might be complaining about.

Tragedy struck, yesterday, at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, in Ijebu North area of  Ogun State when a lecturer, Dr Segun Onabanjo, was  shot dead by suspected cultists.

Onabanjo who until his death was a senior lecturer at the Department of Sociology in the university, was said to have been killed by the assailants who stormed his residence in Odomolasa area of Ilese-Ijebu and broke into his home at about 1:00 a.m.

Cecil Williams who fell into the path of an oncoming train at the 125th St. Station on Tuesday tearfully thanked Orlando his guide dog who stuck by him after the two fell onto the tracks.

Cecil Williams , 61, who had been faced with getting a new guide dog and to part with Orlando because his insurance company won’t cover a nonservice dog, and he can’t afford a pet might have to keep him (Orlando) now. Thanks to two donors who were inspired by the remarkable tale of survival.

The gift of a lifetime was offered by a New Jersey businessman; Andrew Piera, 48, a married father of two and a dog lover who volunteered to pay for all of Orlando’s expenses  for the rest of its life.

Shocked Indianapolis mom learns via Facebook that her son is dead after he's shot in broad daylight. She signed onto Facebook Saturday found herself faced with the heartbreaking news no mother should ever have to endure. On her son's Facebook wall were "RIP" messages and just when she saw a post of someone who wrote "RIP Anthony, I will miss you", then the  phone calls started coming. 

Her 15-year-old son (a star high school football player), Anthony, was killed outside an apartment complex on Saturday afternoon just before 1pm. Police now believe that her son Anthony and a 19-year-old man were attempting a robbery when the older teen fatally shot him twice.

UNN Students Threaten: “Recall Enejere Now Or We Would Burn Down UNN”

Students of the University of Nigeria on Wednesday protested against the suspension of the university’s Chairman and Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Emeka Enejere, by the Federal Government.

The UNN students divided themselves into 11 groups and marched through the major streets of the Enugu metropolis, displaying various placards.

Some of the placards read, “Recall Enejere now or we would burn down UNN”, and “You gave us a fraudulent man like Salisu Buhari as UNN board member, and you have now sacked a honest man like Enejere”Others read, “FG, stop all these vengeful policies”“It is Enejere or no school”.

FCT administration to shut down 150 illegal private schools

 During the 2013 Annual Media Briefing of FCT Education Secretariat, the Education Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Kabir Usman, said the  Abuja administration has concluded arrangements to shut down over 150 substandard private schools operating illegally in the Nigerian capital by January 2014.  It was observed by the Department of Policy and Implementation (DPI) of the secretariat supervising the operations  that most private schools were operating below the expected minimum requirements as some of the schools have secondary school drop-outs as teachers.

FG to phase-out production, use of non-biodegradable plastics


Ministry of Environment on Wednesday, disclosed its plan to phase-out the production and use of non-biodegradable plastics in the country. Plastic waste which has been known to be a major cause of litre in the Nigerian environment, water, pollution, floods and general environmental degradation are clogged by plastic wastes particularly plastic bags and discarded pure water sachets.  Supervising Minister of Environment Arch. Darius Ishaku said “the phase-out programme will be implemented in a gradual, painless and sustainable manner in order not to cause social and economic dislocation.” Ishaku explained that “the increasing use of plastic materials in all facets of our lives with their attendants consequences has been a concern not only to government at all levels but to all Nigerians.”

Police Parade Wife Of Murdered NPDC Staff, Lover Pastor, Others In Edo


Nineteen suspected criminals including a pastor and wife of one Mr Isonguyo Victor, a Deputy Manager at the Nigeria Petroleum Development (NPDC) Company, who was allegedly murdered penultimate Friday by his wife and her Pastor lover, were paraded yesterday in Benin City by the Edo State Police Command.

Also paraded were kidnappers, child defilers and robbers.

State Commissioner of Police, Foluso Adebanjo, who narrated how Mrs Enebong Victor Isonguyo cleverly planned the murder of her husband with her Pastor lover, Prince Udoka Nkanchukwu, said the suspects confessed to be lovers and plotted the death of the NPDC staff and father of three.
