1.8M-year-old skull gives glimpse of our evolution

DMANISI, Georgia (AP) — The discovery of a 1.8-million-year-old skull of a human ancestor buried under a medieval Georgian village provides a vivid picture of early evolution and indicates our family tree may have fewer branches than some believe, scientists say.

The fossil is the most complete pre-human skull uncovered. With other partial remains previously found at the rural site, it gives researchers the earliest evidence of human ancestors moving out of Africa and spreading north to the rest of the world, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Science.

The skull and other remains offer a glimpse of a population of pre-humans of various sizes living at the same time — something that scientists had not seen before for such an ancient era. This diversity bolsters one of two competing theories about the way our early ancestors evolved, spreading out more like a tree than a bush.

Nearly all of the previous pre-human discoveries have been fragmented bones, scattered over time and locations — like a smattering of random tweets of our evolutionary history. The findings at Dmanisi are more complete, weaving more of a short story. Before the site was found, the movement from Africa was put at about 1 million years ago.

When examined with the earlier Georgian finds, the skull "shows that this special immigration out of Africa happened much earlier than we thought and a much more primitive group did it," said study lead author David Lordkipanidze, director of the Georgia National Museum. "This is important to understanding human evolution."
For years, some scientists have said humans evolved from only one or two species, much like a tree branches out from a trunk, while others say the process was more like a bush with several offshoots that went nowhere.

Even bush-favoring scientists say these findings show one single species nearly 2 million years ago at the former Soviet republic site. But they disagree that the same conclusion can be said for bones found elsewhere, such as Africa. However, Lordkipanidze and colleagues point out that the skulls found in Georgia are different sizes but are considered to be the same species. So, they reason, it's likely the various skulls found in different places and times in Africa may not be different species, but variations in one species.

To see how a species can vary, just look in the mirror, they said.
"Danny DeVito, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal are the same species," Lordkipanidze said.

The adult male skull found wasn't from our species, Homo sapiens. It was from an ancestral species — in the same genus or class called Homo — that led to modern humans. Scientists say the Dmanisi population is likely an early part of our long-lived primary ancestral species, Homo erectus.

Tim White of the University of California, Berkeley, wasn't part of the study but praised it as "the first good evidence of what these expanding hominids looked like and what they were doing."
Fred Spoor at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, a competitor and proponent of a busy family tree with many species disagreed with the study's overall conclusion, but he lauded the Georgia skull discovery as critical and even beautiful.

"It really shows the process of evolution in action," he said.
Spoor said it seems to have captured a crucial point in the evolutionary process where our ancestors transitioned from Homo habilis to Homo erectus — although the study authors said that depiction is going a bit too far.

The researchers found the first part of the skull, a large jaw, below a medieval fortress in 2000. Five years later — on Lordkipanidze's 42nd birthday — they unearthed the well-preserved skull, gingerly extracted it, putting it into a cloth-lined case and popped champagne. It matched the jaw perfectly. They were probably separated when our ancestor lost a fight with a hungry carnivore, which pulled apart his skull and jaw bones, Lordkipanidze said.
The skull was from an adult male just shy of 5 feet (1.5 meters) with a massive jaw and big teeth, but a small brain, implying limited thinking capability, said study co-author Marcia Ponce de Leon of the University of Zurich. It also seems to be the point where legs are getting longer, for walking upright, and smaller hips, she said.

"This is a strange combination of features that we didn't know before in early Homo," Ponce de Leon said.

Enugu State Government to demolish building material shops in residential areas

The Enugu State Government says it will soon commence demolition of building material shops located in residential areas of the state capital.

Mr Ike Ugwuegede, Commissioner for Enugu Capital Territory Development authority, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Thursday.

Ugwuegede said the action was part of government’s efforts to sanitise the city and make life comfortable for residents.
The commissioner also said that such shops posed serious threat to people living in those houses.

According to him, all the shops on Nike Lake Road will be demolished as they are all illegal structures.

“There are places like the timber markets designated for sale of building materials but people chose to use residential buildings for such businesses.
“ It is against the building master plan for the state. We have given notice of 30 days for such people to relocate, or have their shops demolished,’’ he said.
Ugwuegede urged landlords to prevent their tenants from using their residential buildings for sale of such materials like cement, rod, and timber.

“Government will no longer tolerate such act; landlords should stop tenants from converting residential buildings to markets.

He also warned local government councils in the urban cities, to stop issuing approvals for building plans, pointing out that it was the responsibility of the Ministry of Lands.

On collapsed buildings, the commissioner said it was collaborating with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), to monitor the activities of quacks in the profession.

He said that it was aimed at forestalling cases of collapsed buildings in the state.

I just hope this does not increase crime rate in Enugu. Relocate in 30 days or have it demolished. I hope persons involved have the better option to take. phew!

Court dissolves six-year-old marriage over childlessness

An Ilorin Area Court on Thursday dissolved the six-year-old marriage between one Aminat Toheeb and her husband, Ismaila, over childlessness in the union.

The 30-year-old Aminat, a resident of Tanke area, Ilorin, had earlier prayed the court to dissolve her marriage to Ismaila since the union had not produced a child.

The plaintiff told the court that her husband was not showing concern to their predicament and was engaging in extra – marital affair while blaming her for their challenge.

“My husband was not encouraging me as expected of him, instead he sees fault in me everyday,” she said.
According to her, their marriage was contracted in 2007 and was yet to produce a child.

“My Lord, I want an end to this marriage because I cannot continue to endure in an unproductive marriage,” Aminat added.

The defendant, who did not object to the prayer of his wife, said she was free to go and try other men.

Ismaila also prayed the court to grant the prayer of his wife without any claim.
The presiding judge, Mr Ibrahim Abdulquadri, dissolved the marriage and issued a certificate of divorce to the plaintiff.

PHCN handover: NLC petitions FG over unresolved issues

HANDOVER OF SHARE CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES TO NEW CORE OWNERS OF PHCN SUCCESSOR COMPANIES IN ABUJA
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has petitioned the Federal Government over the planned November 1, 2013 handing over of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to the new investors.

Labour says such move, without the conclusion of payment of terminal benefits, retirement savings fund and remittance of two per cent of the union deductions as agreed earlier, was not in the interest of the workers.

The petition dated October 14 and signed by General Secretary, Joe Ajaero, urged the government to handle very well the issues of non-payment of retirees who disengaged since 2011; non regularisation of some of the casual workers already identified; 10 per cent equity shareholding by the workers and the shortfall of terminal benefits from June 2012 till date before the handover of the PHCN assets.

NLC noted that it was disturbed by government’s intention to physically handover PHCN facilities to “the new investors” in the power sector without conclusively settling the labour issues.

“Our assertion is predicated on the content of a circular made to the ‘new owners of PHCN successor companies’ calling for a meeting with the National Security Adviser (NSA) on October18, 2013,” the petition said.

“The circular, signed by one Ibrahim Baba Gana, Acting Director, Electric Power, Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), is immature and in bad fate.
“We wonder why Baba Gana would want to aggravate the relative peace we are having based on the understanding that payments would be concluded before physical handover. Could this be a way of getting back at his perceived enemies, given his inglorious exit from PHCN?

“This slated meeting with the NSA, we presume is aimed at deploying troops to all PHCN facilities in order to cow and intimidate the workers to take possession. But we are sorry to disappoint anyone in this vanguard of brutal possession as nothing will deter us from collecting our entitlements. Could it be that government is ready to waste over 50,000 Nigerians – which is the strength of our workforce and could this be the time?

“Please, we wish to state that the November 1, 2013 which has been slated for physical handover to the new investors will remain a mirage without the conclusive resolution of unresolved issues.”

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Benjamin Dikki, has re-affirmed that the Federal Government is committed to concluding the payment of all verified entitlements of members of staff of PHCN successor companies before the end of second week of October.

Dikki explained that the Federal Government had decided to earmark the entire $2.6 billion proceeds expected from the sale of PHCN successor companies for the settlement of the benefits of members of staff.

Iyanya's Dancers: Yes ma!

How does the Moon affect sleep patterns?

In 1969 man landed on the Moon. But since then it has lost none of its mystery. From Lucian's fictional account of travelling to the Moon in the second century AD to "An American Werewolf in London", a 1981 horror film, the Moon continually inspires and puzzles. Now scientists have discovered that people sleep more fitfully on nights when there is a full Moon. How does the Moon affect sleep patterns?

The transformative nature of the Moon was long suspected. It can be heard in words such as "moonstruck" and "lunatic", or glimpsed in fiction. The lycanthrope, a sinister figure who turned into a wolf at full Moon, has dogged horror stories. And even outside such folk tales many scientists have suspected that the Moon may affect the way that people sleep at night.

A study published in Current Biology by Christian Cajochen and colleagues at the Centre for Chronobiology at the University of Basel gives weight to this theory. It was based on data from a study on body clocks and sleep patterns conducted between 2000 and 2003. In that experiment, volunteers were shut away from daylight (and thus moonlight) and their sleep patterns monitored. Neither the participants nor the organisers knew, at the time, that the data would later be used to examine the effect of the Moon, making it a perfect double-blind experiment. When Mr Cajochen and his colleagues compared the data with the lunar cycle, a relationship emerged.

The volunteers slept, on average, 20 minutes less around the time of the full Moon. It took them five minutes longer to get to sleep, and their delta activity (which measures how deeply they slept) was 30% lower than at other times. Melatonin, a sleep-related hormone, was reduced. They reported that they had not slept as well as usual. And none of this was connected, in female participants, with menstrual cycles. The results show that the phase of the Moon affects human sleep patterns, even when the person in question cannot see the Moon.

The researchers believe that, rather than a tidal effect of the Moon on sleep patterns, they have discovered an additional hand on the body's clockface. As with the endogenous daily cycle entrained to the sun, a monthly cycle connected to the Moon exists through a long period of unconscious observation by the body. But it remains something of a puzzle as to why humans are affected by the Moon. Knowledge of the tides is not important to humans in the way that it is to marine iguanas, say, which studies have also found to have lunar cycles. One theory is that lighter sleeping patterns help to guard humans against predators that are able to see more clearly under moonlight. Man's relationship with the Moon continues.

Best Benefits Of Watermelon Seeds For Skin, Hair And Health

Watermelon is an extremely popular fruit. While we all enjoy eating this sweet refreshing fruit, we usually discard the tiny seeds scattered in it without realizing or rather knowing of their health benefits. These seeds are loaded with nutrients including fatty acids, essential proteins and lots of minerals. These seeds are rich in vitamin B like thiamine, niacin, folate and minerals like magnesium, potassium, manganese, iron, zinc, phosphorus and copper. Besides, they are a great source of calories with 100 grams of watermelon seeds providing around 600 grams of calories.

Watermelon seeds are used in Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines. Roasted watermelon seeds are served as a snack or used to garnish salads. In Nigeria they are used in certain soups. Watermelon seed oil is extracted from these seeds which is beneficial for your hair and skin. To say the least, watermelon seeds are edible and can be a healthy option.

Health Benefits of Watermelon Seeds:

As stated earlier, watermelon seeds are a rich source of nutrients and minerals and therefore, should not be discarded. These seeds have a hard outer covering so they should be chewed before swallowing to get their nutritional content. Some of the health benefits of watermelon seeds are given below.

1. Your body requires amino acids but there are some essential amino acids such as arginine and lysine which the body cannot produce on its own and these have to be provided from food sources. Watermelon seeds contain some of these essential amino acids such as tryptophan and glutamic acids. Lysine helps in calcium absorption to facilitate formation of collagen and connective tissues in the body whereas arginine improves the body’s metabolism, cardiovascular system and intercourseual health.

2. Watermelon seeds are good sources of magnesium with 100 grams of seeds providing 139 percent of the recommended daily requirement. Magnesium is vital for normal heart functioning, maintenance of normal blood pressure, supporting metabolic process and protein synthesis. It is also beneficial in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension besides controlling blood pressure and diabetes.

3. Watermelon seeds contain lycopene which is good for your face and also helps in improving male fertility.

4. These seeds are excellent sources of multivitamin B and can replace some of the supplements. Vitamin B present in watermelon seeds comprises of niacin, folate, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B6 and pantothenic acid. B vitamins are vital for maintaining healthy blood, nervous system and effective immune response.

5. These seeds can be used for treating diabetes. Boil a handful of watermelon seeds in 1 liter water for 45 minutes, keeping the pot covered. This concoction should be taken every day like tea.

6. Watermelon seeds are effective in recovering health after illness and sharpening your memory.

7. Almost half of the watermelon seed contains oil which comprises of 20 percent saturated fat and the rest monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat including omega-6 fatty acids. One cup of dried watermelon seeds contains around 50 grams of fat which constitutes about 80 percent of the daily recommended value. Thus, watermelon seeds are an important source of calories and energy.

8. Protein deficiency is quite common, leading to diseases like marasmus and kwashiorkor in poorer countries of the world. Being high in protein, watermelon seeds can be extremely beneficial in combating protein deficiencies. One cup of dried seeds provides about 30 grams of protein. Protein and its amino acids are vital for growth and repair of muscles, skin and connective tissues as well as for making enzymes. Protein is also required for the maintenance of long and strong nails.

Skin Benefits of Watermelon Seeds:

In addition to their health benefits, watermelon seeds are good for your skin as well.  Being rich in nourishing nutrients such as unsaturated fatty acids like oleic and linoleum acids, watermelon seeds keep your skin healthy and glowing from inside. Some of their benefits for skin are as follows.

9. The unsaturated fatty acids in watermelon seeds keep the skin moisturized, soft, firm, well-toned and prevent acne and other skin disorders.

10. Watermelon seeds prevent signs of ageing because they contain antioxidants and oils which make your skin look younger, healthier and more vibrant. These benefits can be observed by consuming a handful or two of watermelon seeds a week.

11. Water melon seed oil, also known as Ootanga oil or Kalahari oil is extremely beneficial for your skin. Being light in texture, it does not clog skin pores, thus allowing your skin to function naturally and is a great moisturizer. Due to its excellent moisturizing properties, watermelon seed oil is used as an essential ingredient in baby oils.

12. Watermelon seed oil also removes sebum, dirt and grease that build up in your skin pores and are responsible for causing acne and giving a dull appearance to your skin. This oil is suitable for all skin types including dry, oily, acne prone and maturing skin.

13. Watermelon seed extract locks moisture, thus combating the ageing degradation. It also rejuvenates the elasticity of your skin.

14. The wide array of nutrients contained in watermelon seeds protects your skin from certain types of skin cancers and infections as well.

Hair Benefits of Watermelon Seeds:

As stated earlier, watermelon seeds have a high content of protein in them which can keep your hair healthy and shiny. This protein contains certain essential amino acids such as lysine, arginine, tryptophan and glutamic acid which are needed by your body to keep your hair healthy and strong.

15. Roasted watermelon seeds contain copper which is involved in the production of melanin. As you know, melanin is a pigment that provides color to your hair and skin.

16. In addition to its skin benefits, watermelon seed oil can also be used for your tresses. As pointed out earlier, this oil is light in texture that gets absorbed easily without clogging the pores of your scalp. It provides moisturizing benefits and improves hair growth by maintaining hair and scalp health.

17. Watermelon seed oil provides the hair with essential fatty acids which are needed by your hair to prevent breakage and keep it moisturized.
