A manager with a new generation bank, Kayode Adeyanju, has
allegedly fled to the United Kingdom with his family following an
allegation that he diverted N146 million in connivance with five
members of staff of the bank.
The Special Fraud Unit, SFU, of the Nigeria Police at Milverton Street, Ikoyi, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, disclosed that they have arrested the other five members staff of the bank allegedly involved in the crime.
The SFU said the suspects are Albert Nsude, 32, Danladi Garba, 38, Nasir Shehu, 40, Daniel Adeboye, 32, and Patrick Jimoh, 32.
They are currently in police custody where they are undergoing interrogation.
SFU’s PRO, DSP Ngozi Isitumen Agu, in a statement said the suspects were arrested following a written complaint by the management of the bank that it had uncovered massive fraud in their Sokoto State branch office and that they suspected the manager in charge, Adeyanju, to be the brain behind it.
Agu said during interrogation all the suspects allegedly confessed that they stole the money on the instruction of their manager, who is now at large.
The suspects further alleged that the branch manager personally withdrew N70 million from the bank’s vault to treat himself of an undisclosed ailment and fled to London with his family.
Agu said the police have launched a manhunt for the manager and after investigation of the matter, all the suspects would be charged to court.

Fake Doctor Arrested in Lagos: Stop Treating People Like Animals
Mr.
Billy Nkechinyere, a 46-year old man who allegedly parades himself as a
doctor, was arrested by officials of the Lagos State Health Facility
Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, HEFAMAA, accompanied by taskforce
officials.
Led by its Executive Secretary, Dr. Jimmy Asuni, the government officials, acting on a tip off stormed Bucknor Street at Jakande Estate, Isheri-Olofin area of Lagos, southwest Nigeria on Monday and arrested the suspect, Mr. Billy Nkechinyere, who hails from Imo State, southeast Nigeria.
Mr. Nkechinyere was operating a health facility without any identification, where he allegedly employed the services of auxiliary nurses to treat people.
The auxiliary nurses fled when they saw the HEFAMAA officials and taskforce officials approaching, while Nkechinyere was arrested alongside a guard in the house that was converted to a hospital.
The suspects were detained at the taskforce office at Alausa, while the hospital was shut by the government officials. Nkechinyere was said to have denied the allegations, claiming that he was not a doctor and he was not the one operating the facility.
According to the taskforce Chairman, Bayo Sulaiman, Chief Superintendent of Police, the guard that was arrested with the suspect had given useful information that would be used as evidence against the suspect in court.
He said before the taskforce could get to the location of the hospital, the suspect had informed his staff to flee, saying that the man’s house was also visited where the police got useful documents to prove that the suspect was operating an illegal hospital.
“His guard has been arrested and he has given us evidence that the man operates an illegal hospital. We went to his house on Tuesday and we got useful documents,” he stated.
Sulaiman warned members of the public parading themselves as doctors, when they were not, to desist from such act as the long arm of the law would surely catch up with them.
“They should stop treating people like animals. If they are not qualified doctors, they cannot practice the profession,” he said.
Sulaiman said that the suspect would be charged to court as soon as the magistrates resume from their training, adding that he would be arraigned at the Special Offences Court at Alausa, Lagos.

Man Claims to Be the Shortest Person in the World
A man from Bhairahawa village in Nepal's southern plains is campaigning for recognition as the World's Shortest Man.
Officials at the Guinness Books of World Records have already given him a green signal, now seventy-three year old Master Nau - who is just 41 centimetres tall - is out to prove his claim is no tall tale.
Confined to a wheelchair, Nau claims to be the shortest person in an "immovable" category - which according to the Guinness World Records recognizes a person who cannot move or walk.
His rival, from Taiwan, who holds the current record in the category, stands 68 centimetres.
World record enthusiast Thaneshwar Guragai has taken up Nau's claim and is corresponding with the organization officials from Guinness World Records. He has confirmed Nau could qualify for the record.
Thaneshwar Guragain said: "They want a video and graphs of Nau being measured. They will let us know once they receive that."
Short men in Nepal, where the average height is 5 feet six inches, have been the subject of discrimination.
But the Himalayan nation has cause to celebrate some of the World's shortest record holders.
Compatriot, Chandra Bahadur Dangi, 74, is the current record holder for the world's shortest man in the "movable" category.
He stands 54.6 centimetres tall. Another Nepali, Khagendra Thapa Magar, 22, enjoyed the record as the world's shortest man (at 67 centimetres) for a year after being measured in 2010 in the tourist town of Pokhara in western Nepal.

French government calls for 12-year-old girl to be prosecuted after waving a banana at black Justice Minister
The child was heard shouting insults at Christiane Taubira during a demonstration in Angers, western France against the government's decision to support same-sex marriages.
The 12-year-old was then seen waving a banana at the minister and shouting: "Who's the banana for? It's for the monkey", according to witness Jean-Yves Lignel, a reporter with LeCourrier de l'Ouest.
Leaders of the ruling Socialist Party now want to press charges against the girl of incitement to racial hatred.
Journalist Mr Lignel wrote on his blog: "Nine of the adults around her did anything to stop her. Some even sniggered."
According to The Times, Harlem Desir, the First Secretary of the Socialist Party, said in a statement: "It is very serious that children are being used and encouraged to shout chants of hated during protests against same sex-marriages. This behaviour is intolerable and constitutes a criminal offence which must now be the subject of a prosecution."
Lawyers have said that because of her age, the child cannot be jailed, fined or given a restraining order.
Ms Taubia said she didn't want to turn the situation into a soap drama but that it was worrying for society.
An investigation has begun after a National Front candidate compared Ms Taubira to a monkey last week.
Anne-Sophie Leclere, who is standing to become a councillor in Rethel, said: 'If push comes to shove I'd rather see her up a tree than in a government like this.'

Thug told girlfriend he wished he hadn't got her pregnant then punched her in the stomach
A 21 year old man Ryan Guntrip, has been jailed because he told his girlfriend he wished he had never got her pregnant, punched her in the stomach and therafter, she lost the baby.
A medical examination carried out the day after Carina MacKay miscarried revealed that the baby had died, but prosecutors could not prove Ryan Guntrip, 21, was responsible.
Colchester Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday that he and Ms MacKay had been arguing at her home in Clacton, Essex, where he was staying on June 18 this year.
He flew into a rage, told her he wished he’d never got her pregnant and punched her in the stomach.
He also put his arms on her shoulders to move her out of the way, the court heard.
The next morning Ms MacKay noticed she was bleeding and went for tests, which revealed the baby was dead.
The court heard she was in the early stages of pregnancy and medics could not be certain what caused the baby’s death.
Guntrip, who has a history of violence, admitted assault by beating.
He was out on licence at the time of the incident for a previous domestic assault, the court heard.
District Judge John Woollard jailed Guntrip for 16 weeks.
He said: 'You have an appalling record of violence. I’m not sentencing you for the tragic consequences.
The judge also made a restraining order, banning Guntrip from contacting Ms McKay, going to the street where she lives or to her grandmother’s house.
Roger Brice, mitigating, said Guntrip wants closure and said there is no link between this incident and the tragic consequences.
He said Guntrip has been using his time in custody productively.

Apkpevwe
Richard (a.k.a 2 Mark), a self-confessed member of the gang of the
kidnap kingpin, Kelvin Onyiara, on Tuesday said Onyiara had over 300
trained abductors spread across several cells in the country.
Onyiara, who was arrested by security
forces last month, is said to be responsible for the abduction of human
rights lawyer, Mr. Mike Ozekhome, (SAN).
Richard, 22, was paraded alongside other
suspected criminals by men of the 4 Brigade/Sector 1 Joint Task Force,
Operation Pulo Shield, in Benin, Edo State.
Also a native of Kokori, in Delta State,
where Onyiara hails from and from where he operated freely until his
arrest, Richard told PUNCH Metro that the group’s “operations” had not stopped since Kelvin’s arrest.
He confessed to the abduction of a
prominent security expert, Ona Ekhomu, and his wife, Victoria, and to
being part of a cell that abducted Edo State High Court Judge, Daniel
Okungbowa. Richard also said he was recruited into the gang by one

Sports Utility Vehicle, which was allegedly identified by Okungbowa as
his, a BMW car, marked Lagos GC 484 EKY, charms and other items.
The 4 Brigade Public Relations Officer,
Capt Roselyn Managbe, said, “As part of our efforts to combat crime, 19
Battalion troops deployed in Kokori community in Ethiope East Local
Government Area of Delta State, on October 18, 2013, following a tip-off
on the kidnap of Ekhomu and his wife, on the Benin-Auchi road, arrested
Richard after a gun duel.
“During the course of investigation, the
suspect, who is from Okweiraka Village, Kokori, Delta State, confessed
to the abduction of Ekhomu and his wife, who were rescued unhurt by the
JTF.
“Richard said he was an Okada

kidnapper under the tutelage of Onyiara, who was arrested sometime in
September 2013 by the Joint Army and Directorate of Security Service in
Port-Harcourt.”
Also paraded were three suspected arms

for alleged gun-running and one Kefas Warili, for parading himself as a
military personnel.
Others arrested by the troops included
suspected illegal bunkerers, who were allegedly intercepted with a
tanker loaded with 15,000 litres of substance suspected to be illegally
refined Automated Gasoline Oil.
Managbe said the alleged oil bunkerers,
Barry Adiotonme and Saturday Ukpebor, were apprehended while trying to
bribe troops with N200, 000 to secure the release of the tanker.
She also said the suspected arms dealers
had been operating under the cover of dealing in building materials
from their stores in Benin City.
Managbe said, “On October 18, 2013, a
patrol team of Operation Thunder Storm, acting on a tip-off, arrested
Egbenayaloben (a.k.a Ebo), Igiemwin and Iyekepelor. These men had
earlier escaped arrest on April 9, 2013, when troops of Operation
Thunder Storm raided stores at No. 4, Jegede Lane, off Lagos Street,
Benin City, Edo State.
“It was established that the suspects
used the sales of building materials as cover to perpetrate their
illicit business of arms selling. They have confessed to the crime.”
Egbenayaloben told PUNCH Metro
that he sold weapons and cartridges to people in Benin City, adding that
he normally got his supplies from one Abiola, at Onitsha market, in
Anambra State.

Jonathan places Oduah on ‘tactical suspension'
President
Goodluck Jonathan may have placed the embattled Minister of Aviation,
Ms. Stella Oduah, on “tactical suspension,” findings by The PUNCH have revealed.
A reliable Presidency source said
Jonathan decided on the “tactical suspension,” hours before the signing
of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement between Nigeria and Israel on
Monday.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of
Aviation, Mr. George Ossi, had on October 24 told the House of
Representatives Committee on Aviation that Oduah led a Nigerian
delegation to Israel to sign the BASA.
The House committee is probing the
purchase of two bulletproof cars at a whopping N255m price by the
Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority for the minister.
Nelson Mandela coup plotters sentenced
The ringleader of a white supremacist
plot to assassinate Nelson Mandela and drive black people out of South
Africa has been sentenced to 35 years in jail, the British Broadcasting Corporation reports.
Former university lecturer Mike du Toit
was convicted last year of treason for his leadership role in the plot,
after a trial lasting nine years.
Twenty other members of his white supremacist militia Boeremag were also jailed for between five and 35 years.
In 2002 it attempted to overthrow the governing African National Congress.
In July 2012 Du Toit, a history lecturer
with a master’s degree in philosophy, was convicted of being behind
nine bombings in Johannesburg’s Soweto township in 2002, killing one
person.
He was also found guilty of authoring a
blueprint for revolution intended to evict black people from most of
South Africa and establish a racially “pure” nation by killing anyone
who got in the way.
Du Toit was the first person to be convicted of treason in South Africa since white minority rule ended in 1994.
Mandela spent 27 years in prison for his
fight against apartheid before becoming the country’s first
democratically elected president in 1994.
Handing down sentence, Judge Eben
Jordaan said there would have been bloodshed and chaos in South Africa
if the Boeremag plot had succeeded.
Mandela would have been killed by a
landmine planted by the group’s bomb squad if he had travelled by road,
rather than by helicopter, to open a school in the northern Limpopo
province, the South African Press Association quotes the judge as
saying.
The bombers had also planned to detonate
five large car bombs in the centres of Pretoria and Johannesburg when
they were caught, it reports.
Analysts say that while race relations
in South Africa are still an issue, white supremacist groups like
Boeremag – which means Afrikaner Power in Afrikaans – have very little
support.
Oduah in another car scandal, faces Reps panel today
The embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah, has been linked to another car purchase scandal.
This time, Oduah is said to have also approved the procurement of two Lexus Limousine cars and two Toyota Prado jeeps.
The minister is expected to appear
before the House Committee on Aviation which is investigating the
purchase of two BMW bulletproof cars for her by the Nigerian Civil
Aviation Authority at N255m.
But during the sitting by the Senate
Committee on Aviation which is probing the crisis in the Aviation
industry, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of
Nigeria , Mr. George Uriesi, said the Lexus Limousine cars and Toyota
Prado jeeps were in the custody of a bank.
Uriesi, who said the limousines were
bought for N60m each , added that he did not have details of the cost
of the Prado jeeps.
He explained that the bank whose name he did not give, funded the purchase of the four vehicles.
14-year-old boy rapes 9-year-old girl to death
Today's news from Punch:
The
police in Lagos State have commenced investigation into how a
nine-year-old girl died, after sustaining injuries caused by alleged
consistent rape.
According to police authorities, the
deceased was raped over five times, by a 14-year-old student, Onyi
Adimabua, in the Ikorodu area of the state.
The father of the deceased, Simeon Jigo, told PUNCH Metro that Onyi is the son of the proprietor of the school his daughter attended.
He said his daughter opened up about the rape when she started having medical problems.
The 77-year-old man said his daughter died on October 3, 2013.
He said, “Up until my daughter’s death,
she was a pupil of Fulfilled Greenland School, Ikorodu, and she was in
primary three. One day, she came home and started complaining of pains
around her vagina, stomach area. We rushed her to Ikorodu General
Hospital.
“A doctor checked her and after
conducting some tests on her, told us that my daughter had sustained
medical complications due to forced sexual intercourse. I was alarmed by
this; so, I had a private discussion with my daughter.
“She told me that it was her school
proprietor’s son, Onyi, that had been raping her. The boy had threatened
to kill her if she ever told anyone about it.”
The indigene of Ondo State told PUNCH Metro
that after initial treatments, he took his daughter to Arogbo in Ondo
State to be taken care of but her condition continued to deteriorate.
A few days after the troubled father
travelled to Ondo State, Onyi, accompanied by his parents, also
travelled to Ondo State, to apologise to Jigo’s family. The girl,
however, was said to have died that very day.
“On getting to the house where my
daughter was, we discovered that she was dead. Onyi confessed that he
had been raping my daughter prior to her death,’ Jigo said.
PUNCH Metro learnt that after the girl’s demise, irate youths in the area attempted to lynch the 14-year-old boy.
The bereaved father was said to have
intervened and reported the matter to a nearby police station, where the
teenager was held for safe keeping. The next morning, Onyi and his
parents travelled back to Lagos.
The alleged rapist’s parents, in company
with a chief in Ikorodu, reportedly visited Jigo when he returned to
Lagos. The group were said to have pleaded that the bereaved father
should not pursue the case but he refused.
Jigo said, “I went to the Ikorodu Police
station to report the case but was surprised when the policemen on duty
said I should not write any statement. They only told me to write down
my telephone number and said they would call me later.
“After waiting for many days without any
call, I wrote a petition and the matter was transferred to the State
Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.”
It was however learnt that Onyi had been taken to his father’s hometown in Delta State thereby stalling police investigation.
The teenager’s parents, however described the incident as the handiwork of the devil.
The 14-year-old boy’s father, Andrew
Adimabua, said, “I trained that boy in the way of the Lord and expected
so much from him. He has confessed to the act; there is nothing to hide.
He told me that he learnt about sex by watching blue (pornographic)
films.
“We are not hiding him and we will
cooperate with the police. On the day the little girl died, he was
beaten up and made to stay in the rain for hours. As a result, he
contracted pneumonia so we sent him home for treatment. When he
recovers, he’ll be taken to the police for questioning.”
Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi
Braide, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the
telephone, expressed shock at the development.
Braide said Onyi would be re-arrested in the course of investigation.
“It is appalling that a teenager could
indulge in such act. The matter is under investigation and the culprit
will be re-arrested.”

Solar eclipse to occur in Nigeria's 36 states on Sunday
The solar eclipse will come with mild darkness across the 36 states of the federation, the NASRDA boss said.
An eclipse is an astronomical event that will have the earth thrown into temporal or partial darkness as the moon blocks the sun's rays from reaching the earth.
The Director-General therefore advised Nigerians to remain calm, as the eclipse would not affect satellite communications or air services.
Mohammed spoke at a press briefing in Abuja.
Mohammed said the eclipse will come in three phases; a partial eclipse at about 1.00 pm when the moon will touch the edge of the sun, the maximum eclipse shortly before 3.00pm when the moon is expected to be closest to the center and shortly after 4.00pm when the moon will leave the sun's edge.
He however stated that there is no cause for alarm and Nigerians should not panic.
The eclipse, however, will be characterised by a flush of sunlight and mild darkness during its peak. The agency has, therefore, made available at its headquarters, sunglasses, which will serve as filters for the effect of the sun.
Dr Mohammed added that: 'It will be like any other day, but its effect will be felt at its peak. It is recommended you wear sunglasses. There is no need to panic,' he concluded.
Earlier in his presentation, the Director of Centre for Astronomy, University of Nsukka, Professor Felix Okpara, who outlined the various times of the eclipse across the nation said, in Abuja, the eclipse will begin by 1:03 p.m. It will be at its maximum by 2.40 p.m and it will end by 4.03 p m in the evening. In Lagos, it will begin by 12.50 p.m, its maximum level will take place by 2.40 p.m and end by 4.01p.m.
In Ibadan, the eclipse will start by 12.52 p.m, the maximum level will be witnessed by 2.32 p.m and it will end 4.01 p.m. In Port Harcourt, the eclipse will begin by 1.03 p.m, its maximum will be experienced by 2.43 p.m and by 4.09 p.m, it will end. In Uyo, the eclipse will begin by 1.06 p.m, its maximum will be experienced by 2.45 p.m and by 4.10 p.m, it will end.
In Enugu, the eclipse will begin by 1.04 p.m, its maximum will be experienced by 2.43 p.m and by 4.07 p.m, it will end and in Kano, the eclipse will begin by 1.07 p.m, its maximum will be experienced by 2.40 p.m and by 4.01 p.m, it will end.
An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when an astronomical object/objects is temporarily obscured, either by passing into the shadow of another body or by having another body pass between it and the viewer as seen from the earth.
Solar eclipse was previously recorded in Nigeria concurrently in 1945, 1959, 2001 and 2006.

ASUU questions Mark’s ‘sound mind’, asks him to apologize to Onosode for reckless comments
Mark had questioned the competence of the team that negotiated the pact, saying “ASUU found that those who were sent there (government negotiating team led by Onosode) simply didn’t know their right from their left,” hence cajoling them into signing an utopian pact.
He stated this last Wednesday during a debate on the floor of the Senate regarding the ongoing action by university lecturers.
But the union said the comments ridiculed the leader of the Federal Government’s team, Deacon Gamaliel Onosode and therefore called on Mark to apologize.
It also called to question the memory of the Senate President, saying Mark’s view smirked of disbelief about his knowledge of national issues as he was already the head of the Senate when the agreement was signed.
He said, “Onosode is a man of proven integrity, and impeccable character. He deserves better than the colour painted of him by the Senate President. The Congress respects the personality of Onosode, an alumnus of the University College Ibadan, who has served as the Chairman of governing councils of UI and University of Lagos and a successful businessman who has served the country in various intervention capacities.
“The congress condemns these disparaging comments and demands that the Senate President apologises to this elder statesman. Can we actually trust these characters to midwife any intervention with a bias and myopic construction myth makes right? he asked.
“Where else in the world are senators earning bogus allowances as we have in the National Assembly? We challenge the Revenue Allocation, Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission to publish salaries and allowance of the senate president for Nigerians to see how patriotic he is to the true state of the economy.”
Ajiboye advised Senate to be sensitive to national issues, saying President Goodluck Jonathan, who was then the Vice President when the agreement with ASUU was signed, instructed the government team to sign the agreement.

Father of pupil who died three years ago in Ondo auto crash still sees son in dreams
Time they say is the greatest healer of wounds, buut the wounds created
by the untimely death of over forty pupils of “Aricent” nursery and primary school in Olupitan area of Ore in Odigbo local government has refused to heal.
It would be recalled that sometimes in 2010, in order to enrich their knowledge, the pupils of the school which was dicovered not to have registered with the state Ministry of Education embarked on a journey to the hilly town of Idanre to catch glimpse of the natural endowment which has put Idanre among the top tourists’ centres in Nigeria.
Like every other person, the students were excited that it was a life time opportunity to visit the ancient town of Idanre.
Originally, the management of the school was planning for an inter-house sports, but the Parents Teachers Association kicked against the move and opted for
an excursion to a tourist centre.

Like every other person, the students were excited that it was a life time opportunity to visit the ancient town of Idanre.
Originally, the management of the school was planning for an inter-house sports, but the Parents Teachers Association kicked against the move and opted for
an excursion to a tourist centre.
On March 17th, 2010, the pupils embarked on a voyage to some important places in Ondo state. Numbering about fifty, the students were accompanied by their teachers and School Proprietor.
The students’ first port of call was the Local Airport in Akure before they proceeded to Idanre town. However, while returning from the journey, the vehicle conveying the hapless students collided with a trailer, crushing the vehicle and the innocent pupils in the unfortunate bus.
The pupils, teachers and the proprietor were not spared as some died instantly. Others later died at the hospital due to poor medical attention.
Three years after the unfortunate incident, residents of Olupitan are still mourning the death of the pupils, teachers and their proprietor. The school has since remained closed.
Some of the parents who lost their wards in the ill-fated crash are still enveloped in utter shock. One of them is the Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association of the School, Mudasiru Abdulsalam.
Abdulsalam, a native of Obaagun, Osun state lost his seven year old son, Yusuf in the accident. He had planned to go with the students on the excursion to Idanre for sight viewing of the natural hills, but was saved by nine day prayers which he had embarked upon.
He had been having series of nightmares seeing himself in a pool of blood. This made him to go into nine days prayers to avert the bad omen God had revealed to him.
“I was supposed to be part of the team that will escort the pupils to Idanre. As the Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association, I was to be the leader of the team.
“We had to shift the date earlier fixed for the excursion because it fell on the day the students were writing examination. But few days to the day we were supposed to go for the excursion, I started having bad dreams which forced me to change my plan”, he said.
Six days after Abdulsalam had started his prayers, the unfortunate incident happened. The Bus hired by the school collided with a trailer and some of the students of the school died instantly, while others who sustained serious injuries were moved to Ore General Hospital.
“I received a call around 7.pm from the proprietor of the school that they were in Ondo Town , and that they had a stop-over to offer prayers to Almighty Allah. He also called me after they left Ondo to tell me that
they were on their way to Ore.
they were on their way to Ore.
“I was however shocked that after several hours , the students had
not returned. It was at this point that I discovered something was
wrong.
“I could no longer do anything when they did not return on time. I
had to pick my prayer mat and rosary and began another round of prayer
to the Almighty Allah for their safe return.
“I was afraid and worried because the School proprietor could not be
reached on phone. I had to continue with my prayer when there was no response from the phone “he recounted.
However, when he finally got the wind of what happened, some students had already died in the crash. His son, Yusuf who was his fourth child was among those who died instantly in the accident.
“I cried when I saw my son in the pool of his blood. Yusuf was a
brilliant boy who was loved by many people in the area because of his
attitude. The poor boy was just too friendly”, he added.
He described the death of his son who was otherwise known as “Yaro’, as a very big loss to the family, stressing that his fond memories still lingered on in the family even after one year.
One strange thing is that Abdulsalam has continued to see his son in dreams. He said there is no month that the poor boy would not appear in his dream.
He said, “There is no single month that I don’t see Yaro, my boy since March 17, 2010. He always come to me in my dreams. I have done many prayers, but the dream wouldn’t stop.
“They told me that the boy is appearing to me because of the love he had for me. No other member of the family sees him except me,”
He stated that it was painful that some of the pupils who survived the accident died later because of poor treatment at the Ore General Hospital.
‘The kind of treatment those injured in the accident received was
nothing to write home about. They were not given quick medical attention
at all. This was responsible for the increase in the death toll”
When asked why the school has remained under lock and key, Abdulsalam
said since the proprietor of the school died in the accident, there was
nobody to take over.
Confusion reigns over Akhigbe’s death
There are conflicting reports over the death of former Chief of General Staff, Vice Admiral Mike Akhigbe.
Earlier on Monday, it was widely reported in the media that the erstwhile military personnel had passed on in England on Sunday after a protracted battle with throat cancer.
However, the Nigerian Navy, on Monday evening had asked the public to disregard the reports of Akhigbe’s death, saying that the ex-Chief of General Staff was alive.
“The Naval Headquarters has made concerted efforts to authenticate the story with the admiral’s family in the U.S. and it was found out that the admiral is alive,’’ Navy had said in a statement issued yesterday.
Relatively, the family had stated that Akhigbe was only in a critical condition at a US hospital and not even iin the UK as reported, adding that the published news of his death was an embarrassment to them.
However, another report reaching DailyPost on Tuesday morning
indicates that the Nigerian Consulate in New York has confirmed the
death of Akhigbe.
According to the report, plans were being made by the Consulate and the deceased’s family on how to convey his remains back to the country for interment.
Similarly, President of the Senate, David Mark had in a statement confirmed the death of Akhigbe.
Mark in a statement through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbodiyan, described his ‘death’ as the loss of “a brother, confidant, friend and comrade-at-arms.”
“He was one of the poster boys of our Course 3 and we were all very proud of him. His death is a huge personal loss to me, the members of Course 3, the Armed Forces, Edo State and the nation.
“But we cannot question God. He alone gives life and takes it when he so desires. We are bound by his decision to take our brother and friend at this time,” he said.
However, the family is yet to make any statement at the time of filling this report.

N255m cars scandal: National Assembly approved budget before purchase – CIAO
From Dailypost
A group, Concerned Independent Aviation Observers, CIAO, has argued vehemently that there was budgetary allocation for the two armoured vehicles purchased by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA.
The group had insisted that the budget was approved by the National Assembly.
According to the group, the controversial acquisition of the two armoured vehicles followed all due processes since it was clearly listed in the 2013 Capital Expenditure budget of the NCAA, and subsequently approved by the National Assembly.
The group clarified that Senator Hope Uzodima, Senate Committee on Aviation Chairman, and his other member, Hon. Nkiruka Onyejeocha, appended their signatures on the NCAA’s capital expenditure that, clearly requested for the operational vehicles.
The National Coordinator of CIAO, Dr. Michael Aburime, had in a statement asserted that the National Assembly approved that 25 operational vehicles be acquired at the rate of N240, 000,000. He said that the controversial armoured cars were only two.
Aburime had argued that the armoured vehicle were not for the Aviation Minister, but for the “operational and safety/security needs of NCAA, especially for hosting international regulatory aviation officers on official visits to Nigeria.”
He also said that due to limited funds, the NCAA did adopt lease financing to procure 52 vehicles, as against what obtains in other agencies.
According to him, “the lease financing in the NCAA was financed by
First Bank Plc at monthly payment of N23,249,181. And for the 2013
expenditure, about N116,245, 905 would be paid. From the brief detail
above, it becomes obvious that the NCAA did not actually pay such bogus
amount of money being alleged and bandied about in public discourse by
uninformed people.
“In fact, the transaction NCAA entered into is N123,754,095 less than the approved amount, as contained in ‘NCAA Capital Expenditure for 2013’.” He argued that rather than being vilified, the NCAA should be commended for demonstrating understanding of project financing and management.
“It is standard practice for public agencies like NCAA to purchase operational and administrative vehicles. So, what the NCAA did is not something exceptional. All public agencies do purchase operational vehicles and NCAA has only done the statutory thing by following due process in getting the National Assembly approval and making the process transparent by spreading the payments over time through lease financing.”
Aburime said the lesson from the purported purchase scandal is for the whole truth to be unveiled. “We do not see any act of impropriety in the NCAA car purchase that should warrant the volley of indignation and vituperations that have erupted in the public space. NCAA is also an important member of various global aviation associations whose members do visit Nigeria periodically to verify and approve our civil aviation standards,” he further affirmed.
